Tatas to build airport in Jamshedpur

Tata’s are planning to build a world class airport in Jamshedpur to provide the steel city with a better connectivity.

Speaking at a Press conference, Mr B Muthuraman , managing director, Tata Steel said, “We have already identified the land near Adityapur. However everything is not in our hands. We need to take up the issue with the government and a lot needs to be done before the project actually kicks off.”

He was speaking on the occasion of inaugural Kolkata- Jamshedpur flight of Air Deccan at Sonari aerodrome today, marking the centenary celebrations of first private steel plant of the country, Tata Steel.

Asked why Tata Steel was not interested in upgrading the existing aerodrome, Mr Muthuraman said there were restrictions in doing that as not much land is available around it. The present airport in the city has a small runway and is not suitable for landing big aircraft. However, the way commercial activities are growing in the steel city more flights are expected to come, he added. The new airport will have a runway of 7000 feet.

SpiceJet eyes south, east for global flight

SpiceJet is focusing on the southern and eastern sectors, which will ultimately help its international ambitions.

The low-cost carrier’s logic is that since the two sectors generate the maximum traffic on the Gulf and Asean (Association of South East Asian Nations) regions, it makes sense to focus there.

Samyukth Sridharan, chief commercial officer, SpiceJet, told DNA Money that the Asean and Middle East (once the government allows other domestic carriers to fly to this region) countries were on its radar.

“The east and south generate a lot of traffic to the Asean and Gulf regions and thus it makes sense to bolster our network in these two zones now. We have already consolidated our network in the west and north,” Sridharan said.

Port Blair is another destination the carrier is keen on and has filed for schedules on the route.

SpiceJet is not looking at investing in any more aircraft for its prospective overseas services and would operate with its existing fleet.

E-ticketing yet to catch on with A-I, Kingfisher scores a perfect 100%

Air-India (A-I) comes last among Indian full-service carriers in selling tickets through the Internet. According to the International Air Transport Association (IATA), the carrier sells 7 per cent of its tickets through the Internet.

The IATA, which has more than 270 members in 140 countries, aims to make every member switch to 100 per cent e-ticketing by May next year as part of its “simplifying the business” (StB) programme. Indian Airlines is, however, far ahead of A-I and sells 64 per cent of its tickets through the Internet.

Among the private carriers, Kingfisher has achieved 100 per cent e-ticketing, while Jet Airways sells 84 per cent of its tickets through the Internet. Cumulative figure for airlines in India is 78 per cent.

E-ticketing is a process through which the ticketing agents (or travel portals) have access to the central reservation system of the airlines. This helps a carrier save on printing charges, transportation and storage charges, and costs of setting up an establishment.

Globally, e-ticketing operations have seen a growth from 16 per cent in June 2004 to 84 per cent in August 2007.

Jet to hike domestic fares

After Air Deccan’s plans to increase fares, Jet Airways follows suit. So, are days of cheap air travel over? While it might still be a wait-and-watch situation from other airlines, Jet, in the meantime, plans to increase fares in the range of Rs 200 to Rs 500 on the domestic routes shortly.

Speaking to newspersons on sidelines of a tourism seminar held by Bombay Chambers of Commerce and Industry, Ms Sonu Kriplani, Vice President-Sales of Jet Airways, said, “The fares would increase within one month because of the rising fuel cost.”
Captain G.R. Gopinath, Chairman and Managing Director of Air Deccan, had also indicated few days ago that the low cost airline would be increasing fares in the range of Rs 500-1,000 in order to turn profitable by early next fiscal.

Mr Siddhantha Sharma, CEO of Spicejet, said, “There are pressures from stakeholders in listed airline companies, whereas others would find it difficult to attract investments unless yields stabilise.”

However, according to some travel industry experts, with the festival season beginning in September-October, airlines traditionally increase fares.

Emirates plans cargo service from Calcutta

Flower bulbs, packed pomfret, jumbo crabs, fresh fruits and vegetables and leather goods from across the state are attracting more buyers abroad, prompting airlines to start cargo services from the city.

With a 15 per cent growth last year in export of perishable goods through the airport, the authorities are also speeding up the process of completing the construction of the cold storage facility in the cargo terminal.

“The cold storage will be operational early next year. It will allow more perishable goods to be sent out through the airport,” said a senior airport official.

Emirates is planning to start freighter operations from the city. Air cargo operation is estimated to grow at a rate of 20 to 25 per cent in the region.

The airline is conducting a survey to draw up detailed plans. Currently, Emirates has only passenger operations to Dubai. Singapore Airlines operates two freighters a week from Calcutta.

According to Emirates cargo officials, about 40 tonnes of flower bulbs were recently carried in a month from Calcutta to Dubai on passenger flights.

Regional airlines look for a slice of the sky

Regional airlines, the new category of airlines created by the Government to promote air travel in smaller cities can also look forward to flying abroad. A senior official told Business Line that the Government wa s open to allowing regional airlines to operate abroad as long as they meet the laid down criterion.

The Government allows airlines having completed five years of domestic flying and having a fleet of five aircraft to operate abroad. At the moment, Jet Airways, Jet Lite and the newly merged state-owned airline, Air India are allowed to operate abroad.

Regional airlines are likely to be promoted by entrepreneurs mainly using small turbo prop or regional jets such as Canadian Regional Jets, Embraers and the ATR, that carry between 80 and 90 passengers and can land on smaller airfields. These smaller aircraft can also be used to operate flights between Thiruvanthapuram and Colombo, Kozhikode-Male or Lucknow-Kathmandu provided the Government gives permission.

Helicopters to take Indian tourism to new high

'We have drawn up a proposal to introduce helicopter tourism in Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and the northeast in the next five year plan. There are so many places, for instance, in Arunachal Pradesh, which can't be accessed by road and hence have not been seen,' Soni told IANS in an interview.

'But by introducing small, say 20-seater helicopters, one can travel to all those unseen places and enjoy their beauty. It will be a big boost to tourism in these places.'

Rural tourism is another field that Soni is focussing on.

'We are highlighting rural tourism in a big way. For a tourist, visiting a village or a rural area is an experience of pure atmosphere, sans noise, pollution or the maddening hassles of the city. These places are also new to the tourist.'

Air India to fly high with Ritu Beri uniforms

Air India have roped in renowned designer Ritu Beri to develop uniquely elegant uniforms for cabin and crew.

Talking to Fibre2fashion, Beri explained, “The concept behind the uniforms is to create a ‘powerful’ global identity for Air India, and a look, which is internationally acceptable and reflects the glory of India.”

She further elaborated, “The inspiration for this project comes from the sacred Konark Sun Temple of Puri. This Temple marks a point of achievement in architecture depicting the grace, joy and rhythm of life, all in its wondrous variety. There is an endless wealth of decoration, from intricate patterns to boldly standing sculptures, which is the foundation for the uniforms. The print on these saris will depict wheels and arches of the Temple. The saris and tunics will have sun symbols with rays going in all the directions reflecting the Konark Chakra.....”

Merged Air India to come into being any time now

The much-awaited, keenly debated merger of the two public sector carriers - Air India and Indian Airlines - into a single airline is almost complete and the emergence of the new entity, the National Aviation Company of India Limited (NACIL), is awaiting a formal order from the Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA).

With NACIL being the parent company, the post-merger brand name will be Air India with two other business arms: Air India Express — the low cost carrier that flies to destinations in the Gulf and will launch domestic operations as well — and Air India Cargo — the new separate, dedicated freighter service.

After a comprehensive meeting here on Wednesday that reviewed the ongoing merger process, V. Thulasidass, Chairman and Managing Director of Air India, told reporters that the legal process of merger would be over once the airline received the order from the Ministry of Corporate Affairs. “We expect it anytime now,” he added.

Mr. Thulasidass who has also been named as the new CMD of the merged carrier Air India said the review meeting focussed more on the Maintenance Repair and Overhaul (MRO) facility for the new airline.

Replying to queries, Mr. Thulasidass said that discussions also centred on having a common IT platform, coordinating and finetuning synergies for the future and joining a global alliance like Star or One World.

Indian businessman to launch UAE carrie

An Indian businessman is launching Kang Pacific Airlines, making it the fifth airline based in the UAE, its owner said.

The airline plans to launch commercial service out of Fujairah in October, to tap the growing demand for air services to certain destinations.

Initially intending to serve the Philippines, Bangladesh, India and Sri Lanka, Kang Pacific also plans to operate flights to the UK.

The airline will operate as a hybrid between a budget and a full service carrier. When launched, it will join Emirates airline, Etihad Airways, Air Arabia, and RAK Airways.

The airline is the brainchild of Paul Kang, an Indian businessman who previously owned companies involved in aviation catering as well as supplying to duty free shops in the UK and Fujairah.

Kang told Gulf News that he is self-financing the airline's launch with $10 million in startup capital, primarily to procure two DC-10s, a Boeing 747 and one Boeing 737 over the next six months. The fleet will primarily consist of leased aircraft roughly 20 years old.

Jet fights to shape up JetLite

Jet Airways is facing a tough time to turn around Air Sahara, after acquiring it for $340 million around three months back.

While a part of the difficulties lies in the poor condition of Air Sahara’s fleet, a different work culture of Sahara employees is only adding to the problems, according to Garry Kingshott, CEO of JetLite (new name of Air Sahara).

For Kingshott, the primary focus is on issues like revamping the condition of poorly kept fleet and jets grounded for years and make employees fit into Jet Airways’ vision of a professionally-managed airline.

To deal with all these and put the airline back on track, the Australian CEO has charted out a turnaround roadmap and started working towards this goal. To start with, JetLite has retained only 2,300 of Air Sahara’s 4,100 employees who it felt could fit into Jet’s vision of ontime passenger-friendly performance.

Then, it is also going to lease up to 15 planes till 2009, before deliveries of the previously ordered 10 Boeing 737s begin.

Sahara had a fleet of 24 leased aircraft, 17 Boeing 737s and seven Canadian Regional Jets (CRJs). ‘‘When Jet acquired the airline, only 10 737s and two CRJs were flying. Obviously the fleet was not in a terrific condition. ..Today 15 Boeings and three CRJs are flying. By October-end, we expect a majority of the fleet back in air,’’ Kingshott said.

Pilots now have to report an hour before departure time instead of earlier 45 minutes.

Jet set to fly Madrid, Birmingham, Geneva

Jet Airways is all set to spread its wings to three new foreign estinations—Birmingham, Madrid and Geneva.

The airline has received the government’s permission to fly on these sectors even as Kingfisher and SpiceJet await the empowered group of ministers (EGoM) decision on whether or not to lower the requirement for flying on international routes to three years of domestic experience.

“We have agreed to grant Jet Airways the traffic rights to operate on India-United Kingdom, India-Spain and India-Switzerland route via Brussels under code-sharing agreement with Brussels Airlines,” a senior official in the ministry of civil aviation told ET.

Jet will be operating the flights via Brussels under a code-sharing agreement with Brussels Airlines. International routes are lucrative for domestic airlines as the sector is experiencing a 16% growth with better profit margin. The traffic on the India-UK route is growing even faster at 60-70%, say experts.

Upbeat Mallya will fly to US by 2008

Kingfisher Airlines will start operations to the San Francisco and New York in the US in April 2008, the airline's chairman Vijay Mallya said on Tuesday.

“We have filed an application with the US State Transport Department for permission to fly to the US", Mallya said at the sidelines of a marketing seminar organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry.

Mallya said Kingfisher Airlines would fly on Air Deccan's licence if overseas flying norms were not relaxed. At present private Indian airlines with over five years of domestic flying experience and a fleet size of 20 aircraft are permitted to fly overseas.

“Air Deccan will be a five-year old airline in 2008. Even if the overseas norms are not relaxed, we will fly on Air Deccan's licence,” he said.

A proposal to relax overseas flying norms is under consideration of a group of ministers headed by External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee.

Kingfisher has filed an application for an open offer to buy an additional 20 per cent stake in Air Deccan with the market regulator Securities and Exchange Board of India.

Jet Airways Becoming A Formidable Rival To MAS In The U.S.

Jet Airways, according to aviation experts in the U.S., could become a formidable competitor to Malaysia Airlines in the United States.

Jet Airways, the "new kid on the block", whose arrival has already created some unease among a number of airlines, including India's official carrier Air India and Dubai-based Emirates, which rely heavily on the financially-strong U.S.-based Indian community for traffic, is also eyeing the Malaysian Indian community in the U.S., many of whom would not mind stopping over in India for a day or two before taking a connecting flight to Kuala Lumpur.

Trumpeting its "excellent service, modern aircraft and comfortable seats with more legroom", Jet Airways has been spending massively on publicising its services.

Huge advertisements detailing the aircraft's comfortable interior configuration, the meals served on board and the efficient service have begun to appear in the proliferating ethnic print and broadcast media catering exclusively to Indians living in the U.S. and also persons of Indian origin (PIO), as the Indian diaspora.

Regional airlines look for a slice of the sky

The rush for ‘regionals’ or commuter airlines has begun. A string of new carriers is awaiting specific details on fiscal benefits, before they begin providing small and medium-haul air services connecting smaller communities with larger cities and hub airports. The Bird group, a Delhi-based travel and IT firm which markets travel booking software Amadeus in India, could be among the first to take off in North India, after the new policy was announced by the minister for civil aviation Praful Patel last Thursday. Four unnamed South Indian airlines are also waiting in the wings for takeoff.

In all, at least half a dozen start-ups including Premier Airways’ airline brand Easy Air and Air Dravida in the south, Mega Airlines from the North-East and North Star in the west are planning to seek licence under the new category. Most are awaiting details on the fiscal benefits for regional airlines, say industry experts.

The Union civil aviation minister last week announced the policy that creates a new category of airlines which will operate primarily between airports of any of the four regions classified as North, South, West and East/North-East.

The policy, announced with much fanfare, does not offer any sops to the carriers for the moment. Incentives like exemption from navigation and airport charges and a lower 4% sales tax on ATF are available to both regional as well as pan-India carriers, as long as the weight of the aircraft is below 40,000 kg.

Book aisle, window seats and pay extra

Following the global model adopted by LCCs to increase cash flow, one of the leading Indian players, SpiceJet, has started online blocking of seats by charging Rs 50 for each passenger.

The biggest LCC, Air Deccan, also says it will also levy a charge for booking once seat numbers get institutionalised in its reservation system. Other no-frill carriers may also have to follow suit to earn some much-needed money as almost all airlines are making losses.

SpiceJet's single configuration Boeing 737 has 189 seats in 32 rows. The most preferred remain window or aisle seats that means 128 seats can attract this premium booking charge.

So now SpiceJet has now enabled itself to earn up to Rs 8,850 more from each flight and with the airline operating 86 flights daily between 15 destinations, this figure goes up to a whopping Rs 7.6 lakh. This figure can only get healthier as more planes join the fleet and daily flights increase.

SpiceJet expects to fly overseas by next year

Domestic low-cost carrier SpiceJet on Friday said it may to start flights to overseas destinations with the relaxation of civil aviation policy for new carriers to fly abroad.

"By next year we expect to get a license to fly abroad. We will fly shorter destinations, which are similar to those we are operating in India," Spicejet Director Ajay Singh told media.

Asked about the possible destinations, he said it has not been finalised yet as the government policy was not clear.

"We have not finalised any destination. There is not much of clarity on the new aviation policy but we believe that government has relaxed norms for minimum flying experience to three years form the earlier five years," Singh said.

On the company's fleet expansion plans, he said with $350-400 million loan from the US Exim expected to be cleared the carrier would add 10 aircraft between 2009 and 2011.

Currently, SpiceJet has 14 planes, which will be taken up to 19 by March 2008 and to 26 by December 2008. It would be starting its Delhi-Kochi direct flight by August 26, while it is already flying in the Delhi-Bangalore-Kochi sector.

High-flying dreams of students get clipped before taking off

If You enroll yourself in a fancy cabin-crew training programme, on the face of it you’re being groomed for a career in the skies — but the harsh reality is that after the completion of a year-long course and spending over a lakh rupees, you may end up as a receptionist or at most work in graveyard shifts at a call centre.

What comes as a surprise is that none of the airlines show any preference for students coming out of such institutes. “......Often during recruitment, we find applications from those who don’t have the eligibility in terms of physical stature.

These institutes enroll as many students they can and only a few lucky ones manage to get the desired job, which such institutes overtly advertise,” says a senior HR manager, Air India. With the unprecedented growth in the aviation sector all across India, various cabin crew academies have sprouted, which promise to help realise your dream to fly. But what remains unknown is that your wings can be clipped right at the doorstep of such academies.

Domestic travel segment clocks 38% growth

It could never have been better than this for the civil aviation industry. There has been a growth of more than 38% in domestic travellers in the first seven months of the current year. This year, between January and July, more than 248.52 lakh passengers travelled as against 180.34 lakh in the same period last year.

According to sources in the civil aviation ministry, the marketshare of full service airlines has also seen an increase. In fact, this has come at a time when more and more players are coming into the airlines business. Leading the pack is Indian Airlines which has seen an increase in its marketshare from 19.8% to 20.5% in the first seven months of the current year.

Jet Airways saw a jump from 22% to 22.7%, Jet Lite from 6.7% to 7%, while Kingfisher registered a growth in marketshare of 13% from 12.8%. However, the marketshare of low-cost carriers (LCC) dropped, with Air Deccan, which had a marketshare of 18.1%, witnessing a drop to 16.1%, while Spice Jet dropped from 8.3% to 7.7% in the same period.

Air Travel in India may get Heavy on Pocket

Air Deccan's Bangalore-Hubli route, which witnessed the low-cost carrier's inaugural flight four years ago, is proposed to be terminated. Reason: Kingfisher Airlines has proven to be more profitable on this sector, and is seen as a better bet on the route.

In other words, what many customers feared is beginning to happen. The recent marriages between low-cost and full-fare airlines- Kingfisher-Air Deccan and Jet-Sahara- are leading to some serious rescheduling of flights to improve the profitability of the airlines. For customers, it implies the withdrawal of low-cost options that they have enjoyed for some years.

A team from both sides (Air Deccan and Kingfisher) are looking at how best we can service various routes profitably, by drawing on each other's strengths, says Capt G R Gopinath, executive chairman of Deccan Aviation.

Garry Kingshott, acting CEO of JetLite (formerly Air Sahara and now a low-cost airline), says the new schedule for JetLite, which will come into effect from September 1, has been developed with Jet Airways to ensure that there is no cannibalisation.

Air China Launches Online Check-In At Major Hub Cities

Passengers taking Air China's domestic flights originating from Chongqing, Guiyang, Xi'an, Guilin and Dalian can now choose to check-in at Air China's website.

July and August of every year is the peak season of air transportation for most of the major airports in China. Passenger traffic during this period grows substantially, which results in big congestion at the airport check-in counter with long queues of passengers waiting anxiously for check-in.

In order to shorten the waiting time for passengers, to facilitate the operational efficiencies of the airport and to ease the tension at the check-in counter, Air China has strengthened its e-commerce efforts by coordinating with the local airport authorities and expanded the online check-in service to major hub cities domestically. The online check-in and boarding pass printing service implemented in airports with high traffic volume has avoided the frustration felt by passengers queuing at the terminal, while bringing great convenience for travelers.

Virgin America Launches, Weather Delays First Flight

Virgin America, the low-cost airline partly backed and fully branded by British entrepreneur Richard Branson, launched on Wednesday with a splash of publicity -- but found its first flight delayed by a midsummer New York storm.

The delay was a timely reminder for the new airline -- which offers leather seats, mood lighting, entertainment systems, first-class seating and low fares on point-to-point flights -- that the US domestic market is fraught with difficulties.

'The American airline industry is abysmal,' Virgin Group founder Branson said at New York's John F. Kennedy Airport before passengers boarded the first flight. 'The reason they go bust is they don't offer any service to the customer.'

Like JetBlue Airways seven years ago, San Francisco-based Virgin America is accenting hip customer service on flights aboard new Airbus A320 aircraft in an attempt to build loyalty in an industry with sharply deteriorating reliability and customer satisfaction.

Virgin America spent nearly two years under regulatory scrutiny and won approval to operate from the US Transportation Department only after promising to restructure its ownership and board and distance itself from Branson's Virgin Group, which runs Virgin Atlantic Airways.

"It's been a tough battle to try to get Virgin America up and running," Branson said on Wednesday, reflecting on the opposition he faced from competitors and regulators.

Several US-based carriers and unions opposed Virgin America's entrance on grounds that Branson would control the company in violation of a US law that limits control of airlines to US citizens. Virgin Group holds a minority stake in the company, which the law permits.

Transportation authorities also worried that Virgin America Chief Executive Fred Reid, a veteran US and international airline executive, was too close to Branson and overseas interests and insisted he be replaced within months after Virgin America's inaugural flight.

Cathay's H1 Profit Climbs 55 Percent

Cathay Pacific Airways posted a 55 percent rise in first-half earnings on Wednesday, on strong passenger demand and synergies from a buyout of rival Dragonair.

Cathay said on Wednesday it would focus on taking advantage of its newly acquired Dragonair -- and its extensive network across mainland China -- and partner Air China.

Hong Kong's largest air carrier posted a net profit of HKD$2.58 billion (USD$330.8 million) for the January-June period, versus HKD$1.67 billion a year ago.

"The second half of 2007 will be an important one," chairman Christopher Pratt said in a statement.

Dragonair became a wholly owned subsidiary of Cathay on September 28. 2006.

Cathay Pacific holds a 17.32 percent stake in Air China. The latter said last month that first-half net profit would jump at least 20 times, from just CNY45 million yuan (USD$6 million), under domestic accounting standards.

AI's non-stop flight between New Delhi-New York

After successfully launching Mumbai- New York non-stop flight, newly merged Air India will launch a non-stop flight between New Delhi and New York from January 2008, Indian Chairman and Managing Director Vishwapati Trivedi said on Saturday.

He said soon direct flights for Haj pilgrims will be launched from Indore to cater to the demand of the people of the region.

Referring to delays in flight operations, he said it was mainly due to air congestion and non-availability of parking space at airports and to address these problems the government is mulling to start parking facility at airports like Bhopal, Indore and Lucknow among others.

Jet Airways launches flight to US

Jet Airways on Sunday flagged off its maiden flight to the US, becoming the second Indian carrier after Air India to fly to America.

Air India started non-stop services to the US earlier this week. However, unlike Air India, Jet would have a two-hour stop at Brussels, which would be brought down to 90 minutes in the future, a company official said.

Giving reason for the stop at Brussels, the official said customer feedback suggests that they are comfortable flying transatlantic with a break in-between.

Jet, with the US in its map, plans to add services to Toronto from September 5 and Johannesburg from October or November as soon as its new fleet arrives.

Earlier, Jet Chairman Naresh Goyal said, the company would look at collaboration with its competitor Air India in the transatlantic route.

In addition to information on the airline and its latest promotions, www.emirates.com provides easy-to-navigate prompts to guide travellers through the process of selecting their flight itinerary, purchasing of tickets and selection of seats.

Customers will be informed that exit row seats onboard any flight can only be allocated at airport check-in counters, as per international aviation regulations.

From its Dubai hub, Emirates currently flies to 92 destinations in 59 countries. On July 1, the fast-growing airline launched daily flights to Venice (Italy), and later this year will also start services to Newcastle (UK), Sao Paulo (Brazil), Toronto (Canada), Ahmedabad (India) and Houston (USA).

Roving agents to help you check in fast

"Check in as you walk in," is the latest concept for a speedy check-in for the jet-setting passenger. Roving agents, strapped with two mobile devices — a palm top to punch in the PNR number and a mini printer that prints the boarding pass — walk around the airport issuing people their boarding passes.

The pass looks similar to the one issued over the counter and these agents also allow the passenger to choose his seat.

Airlines have constantly been innovating processes to speed up check-in for fly by day-return passengers, as they constitute over 40% of the load factor on flights between metros. Though airport kiosks have not captured the fancy of these passengers, boarding passes off the internet have got a 20% traction, report some airlines.

Airlines would look to offer this check-in service (roving agents) at their club lounges for business class passengers. However, the number of roving agents will vary from airport to airport and departure traffic.

The equipment that each roving agent carries is estimated to cost between Rs 70,000 and 80,000.

Growth in World Air Traffic Slows

International airline passenger traffic and cargo shipments grew at a slower pace in the first half of the year, a trade group said Monday.

The International Air Transport Association, which represents more than 240 airlines, said Middle East departures and arrivals grew by nearly 18 percent in the January through June period, helping to boost overall passenger traffic by 6.3 percent from a year ago. In the first half of 2006, worldwide passenger traffic climbed 6.7 percent.

Growth in air cargo shipments also slowed. International cargo shipments increased by 2.7 percent from the first half of last year. During the same time period in 2006, cargo traffic was up 5.2 percent from the prior year.

Worldwide, airlines will buy nearly 1,800 new planes over the next 18 months, with the largest share being taken by Asian carriers to meet demand from China and India, according to the association.

The association's midyear report, which measures passenger demand by revenue for each kilometer flown by passengers, also highlighted 9.9 percent growth from January through June in flights to and from Africa compared with last year as flights increased from Asian and Middle Eastern cities.

Growth was also strong in Asia, which reported a 6 percent increase in passenger traffic.
Industrywide, international flights reported an average load factor, or occupancy level, of nearly 76 percent for the January-June period, up 0.6 percent from last year.
