FROM THE COACH| RESUME SKILLS| Talk about your work experience! Really Talk

Every monday is day with The Coach

Last monday I wrote about RESUME SKILLS| Obejective on(of) your resume? ;see it at http://myhospitalitycoach.blogspot.com/2007/11/resume-skills-obejective-onof-your.html

Some fantastic comments followed and a lot of interaction happened (Click here to read all the queries & my answers)

Today I want to talk about the meat or the main part of your resume.

If you have any work expereince, then you must Talk about your work experience.
I dont mean mention it on your resume, but really talk about it.

Most resumes have something like this:

' May 2006 - April 2007 Customer Services Agent XYZ Co'
or
' April 05 - May 07 Guest Service Associate ABC Hotel'

This tells the recruiter nothing!

INTERVIEW SKILLS| Tell me something about yourself? What to do??

FROM THE COACH

INTERVIEW SKILLS| Tell me something about yourself? What to do??

I know this question will be asked in every interview I go to, and yet my answer changes.
I know every interviewer will start with something like this and yet Tell me something about yourself, gets me nervous.

Oddly enough, I should be the best person to talk about myself.
I mean its about me and yet I stumble, not knowing if what I am about to say is what they want to hear.
Should I tell the truth or say something that sounds great and professional?

I am honest, hardworking and sincere. How many others said the same thing?
What should I do to handle the most asked question in interviews?
How should I answer, 'Tell me something about yourself"?

Go to INTERVIEW SKILLS| Tell me something about yourself? What to do??

NEWS| Private firms to offer ground handling at Hyderabad airport

With the Union government allowing developers of new airports to outsource ground-handling and cargo services, the upcoming international airport will have private players offering them.

What is being hitherto handled either by airline companies themselves or the Airports Authority of India will now be a domain of private companies, once the airport becomes operational.

Beginning with passenger check-in, many important services come in to play to avoid any hitch in the travel.

“Though these services go unnoticed, they are very vital to any airport. Now that they are privatised, the agency will have to provide world class services at any cost,” according to V.S. Bobba, managing director of Menzies-Bobba Aviation, the ground-handling agency at the international airport coming up at Shamshabad.

What services go into ground-handling? Ticket sales and service counters, aircraft
pushback and towing, aircraft loading and unloading, de-icing and others form part of it.

NEWS| TCS solution for British Airways to monitor cabin crew

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) is building a new software management solution for British Airways to monitor cabin crew. This solution can be made commercially available for other airlines, according to Paul Coby, Chief Information Officer, British Airways.

Addressing a press conference here on Monday at the launch of the TCS Travel and Hospitality Innovation Lab 2.0, Mr. Coby said both British Airways and TCS would jointly work on the ‘leading edge cabin crew’ management solution. It was not about commodity, but working on leading edge system, he added.

The cabin crew management would help the airline monitor its 15,000 plus cabin crew, mostly based at Heathrow and Gatwick, and some in international locations such as Buenos Aires, Delhi and Bahrain.

At present, monitoring was done manually with the use of Microsoft’s Excel sheet, while the new solution would automate the entire cabin crew management, said G. Raghavan, Head, Travel and Hospitality, TCS.

NEWs| Jet Airways is getting into hospitality

Jet Airways is getting into hospitality venture. Naresh Goyal-owned airline has acquired 15 acres near the Brussels airport in Belgium. The airline said this 500-room five-star deluxe hotel would mainly target Jet passengers who transit through its base in Brussels and the airline crew. It would also have a catering kitchen to serve all Jet flights originating from Belgium and London.

"We are going to tie up with a leading foreign chain of hotels for this project though the hotel will reflect our culture. It will go in direction of achieving our dream of establishing Jet as a truly Indian brand abroad,'' said an official.

Incidentally, Oberoi Hotel chairman PRS Oberoi is on Jet's board of directors and the airline is likely to use his experience for this project. To cater to its Indian clientele, the airline is planning to have ethnic dishes on its menu and a dedicated restaurant is also being considered.

The Belgium government is supporting Jet's move to build the hotel.

NEWS| Air India plans acquiring up to 100 aircraft

Air India could look at acquiring up to 100 aircraft for meeting its requirements for a five-year period beginning 2011. A clear picture on the exact numbers is likely to emerge in the next few days after a review meeting of the fleet requirement is completed here on Wednesday.

The National Aviation Company of India (NACIL), the company into which Air India and Indian have been amalgamated, is assuming a Compounded Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 12 per cent in international traffic and 15 per cent in the domestic traffic as forecast for meeting its fleet requirement, sources told Business Line.

The aircraft requirement are being considered keeping in mind not only the growth in the domestic and international markets but also sixth freedom operations rights that have been given to Air India.

The sixth freedom rights allow an airline to pick passengers from a country other than its origin and carry them to a third country.

VIEWS| Boom in domestic aviation will continue for at least a year more

The boom in the domestic airline industry will continue for at least another one year with passenger traffic likely to grow at 20-30 per cent.

This is the opinion of more than 60 per cent of the chief executive officers who participated in a snap poll conducted by the Federation of Indian Airlines (FIA).

While declining to divulge which airlines were more optimistic on passenger growth prospects, sources said that the meeting where the poll was carried out was attended by officials of the eight domestic airlines including the Chairman and Managing Director, Air India, Mr V. Thulasidas.

The growth of the industry could be faster if steps were taken to bring down the cost of aviation turbine fuel as also develop airport infrastructure, the CEOs felt. A majority of those present were of the opinion that three-to-five years was a realistic time frame for improvement in airport infrastructure in the metro cities, while it would take one-to-three years for the similar development at airports in non-metro cities.

There was also a feeling that the current Government policy of not allowing two airports in a city needed to be reviewed.

NEWS| Spain woos Kingfisher for Madrid European hub

Spain is in advanced talks with Indian private carrier Kingfisher Airlines to make Madrid its European hub for onward flights to the US and South American destinations, an official said Thursday.

"We are in advanced talks with Kingfisher and hope to see progress," Enrique Ruiz e Lera, director of the Spain Tourism Board for India, Southeast Asia, Australia and New Zealand, told IANS here.

"We had previously spoken to Jet Airways to make Madrid its European hub. Brussels offered them a better deal but we hope for better luck with Kingfisher," the official added.

Based in Singapore, Ruiz e Lera is also the tourism counsellor of the Spanish embassy here. He is in India with a 19-member Spanish delegation for meetings and workshops with travel agents and tour operators to increase tourist inflows from this country.
The delegation participated in a "very successful" four-day workshop in Goa last month that some 88 Indian companies attended.

NEWS| AI plans special unit for ground handling

With private Indian carriers setting high passenger service standards, the Maharaja - which is in the midst of a do-or-die makeover - has been forced to pay attention to this long ignored aspect.

Known for indifferent passenger handling over years, the National Aviation Company India Ltd (NACIL) - formed by merging Air India and Indian Airlines - has for the first time set up a strategic business unit (SBU) for ground handling at airports. Its entire focus will be on facilitating passenger movement at airports.

'All airport functions that Air India and Indian Airlines used to perform like security and baggage handling would be done by this SBU and its focus would be on customer care,'' NACIL CMD V Thulasidas said. Also, the new ground handling policy cleared by government mandates AI to form a company to do the job.

''For airport check-in we have decided to deploy only our own people, including new recruits,'' said Thulasidas. Among other things, the check-in experience at AI counters has been a sore point with travellers, mainly abroad, where this job is outsourced. On the other hand, the sole private Indian carrier flying abroad, Jet, and the one waiting in wings to do so, Kingfisher, highlight customer service as their USPs.

VIEWS| Civil aviation sector to receive Rs 6 lakh crore in 10 years: Patel

Civil Aviation Minister, Praful Patel said that the aviation sector is the future of the Indian economy and the sector alone will receive investment of Rs six lakh crore in the next 10 years besides creating 30 lakh jobs, helping contribute in a major way to the economy.

He was speaking at a function after inaugurating India’s first mobile simulator by Jeet Aerospace Limited for training pilots. He said: “There was a growing demand for training 1,500 pilots every year due to the phenomenal growth in the civil aviation sector.”

Emphasising that aviation is not a luxury and without connectivity there is no business anywhere Patel said with connectivity even countries such as Dubai and Singapore which have no heritage compared to us can muster several times India’s tourist traffic. He said with major upgradation programmes lined up in the aviation sector, we will be fourth country in the world to go for satellite navigation systems.

Having inaugurated India’s first mobile flight simulator been built by Captain Anil Gadgil and Kavita Gadgil whose son Flight Lieutenant Abhijit lost his life in a MIG crash at Suratgarh six years ago. He said that safety is very important in aviation and the simulator was a bold step by the family.

NEWS| Air Deccan registers highest loss ever

Costs of an ongoing merger, a lean passenger season, and softening ticket yields have seen India’s biggest low-cost airline, Air Deccan, posting its largest ever quarterly net loss of Rs253.18 crore in July-September, its first quarter this year, nearly six times the loss in the year-ago period.

The performance signals continued financial challenges for a carrier attempting to reinvent itself after a buyout and a new chief executive took over at the helm of the airline.

The losses in the comparable period last year were just under Rs43 crore for the quarter ended September 2006, but the airline then had seen a one-time income from outside sources made on asset sales. In just this one quarter, the airline’s losses equal 55% of the company’s annual losses for the last financial year, which it ended on 30 June with about Rs419 crore in the red.

Deccan Aviation Ltd, the airline’s parent company, has been in transition after United Breweries (Holdings) Ltd bought out a 26% stake in the airline on 1 June. Since then, both Deccan and Kingfisher Airlines Ltd, which is also owned by United Breweries, have worked together to improve Deccan’s performance and customer perception, which had suffered because of late flights, cancellations and the physical condition of the company’s planes.

NEWS| Kingfisher readies mega overseas plan

Kingfisher Airlines Ltd, together with its low-fare airline affiliate Deccan, wants to fly direct flights to two dozen destinations outside India as part of an ambitious launch of international operations that are scheduled for early next year.
Deccan, the airline that Kingfisher is likely to use to fly overseas, has sought government permission to fly to the US, the UK, Germany, Canada, Switzerland, South Africa, China, Australia, Thailand, Malaysia, Nepal, Sri Lanka as well as some countries in West Asia.

State-run National Aviation Co. of India Ltd’s Air India flies to 40 international cities from India and Jet Airways (India) Ltd flies to about 10.
In September, JetLite (India) Ltd, formerly Air Sahara and now controlled by Jet, sought approvals for daily flights between Chennai and Colombo as also New Delhi and Kathmandu, besides permission to fly to Dubai, Oman, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain and Saudi Arabia.
Both Kingfisher Airlines and Deccan are not eligible to fly international routes yet. Current civil aviation rules do not allow an airline with less than five years’ domestic operations to fly overseas and a proposal to dilute that rule is still pending with a group of ministers who are scheduled to meet later this month.

NEWS| IndiGo, GoAir rising faster than old flyers

According to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), while market share of Air Deccan has slipped from 18.1% in the second quarter of 2007 to 16.5% in the third quarter, Indian’s share has decreased from 21% to 19.8%. JetLite’s market share, too, has dropped, albeit marginally. In the first quarter of the year it had 8.1% of the market compared to only 7% in the second and 6.9% in the third quarter.

On the other hand, IndiGo’s market share has increased from 6.7% in the second quarter to 8.4% in the third quarter while GoAir’s share has increased by 0.3%. SpiceJet has maintained it’s share at 8.3% in both the quarters.

IndiGo is the largest gainer of market share, which can be attributed to the capacity that it’s adding. The airline is adding around one aircraft each month to its fleet. In September, it had 12 aircraft and by the end of this year, it will have 15. While increase in market share reflects capacity addition, load factors matter too.

For JetLite and Air Deccan, the number of passengers carried has decreased too. While JetLite carried 8.12 lakh passengers in the first quarter, it carried only 7.69 lakh passengers in second and 7.08 lakh passengers in the third quarter.

NEWS| Domestic air fares to go up from Nov 5

Domestic flights will become more expensive from Monday. Jet Airways, Paramount Airways and the low-cost airline SpiceJet are to raise their fares by Rs 150 to offset the increase in price of aviation turbine fuel.

This is the second successive month that the airlines are hiking the fuel surcharge.

State-owned Air India was among those yet to take a final decision on this.
In a statement, Jet Airways said that from November 5, the fuel surcharge would go up by Rs 150 on all types of fare for travel in business and economy class.

The surcharge, however, would have to be paid if the tickets are presented for any voluntary change on or after November 5, the statement adds.

NEWS| Mukesh Ambani gets Rs 245-crore 'flying office'

Business magnate Mukesh Ambani's new "flying office" worth nearly Rs 245 crore quietly arrived at Mumbai Airport early Friday.

The gleaming white-bodied aircraft with blue stripes, has been parked in Reliance's private hangar near Kalina, the southern end of the domestic airport.

The Airbus A-319 aircraft, described as a "flying palace" by airport officials in the know, has been given the registration number VT-IAH.

Kept under tight security, it is off bounds for all, except the concerned airport, security and Reliance personnel, the officials told IANS.

Among the top-class facilities the aircraft has been equipped with include a plush corporate office, a boardroom for holding top-level meetings in the sky, satellite communications, a master bedroom with an attached toilet, galleys and a lounge with a sky-bar.

All this has cost an estimated US $15 million (about Rs 60 crore), in addition to the aircraft cost.

The delivery of the aircraft was scheduled end-April 2007. However, aviation sources say, it was delayed mainly because of the lavish interiors that have been done.
But, it proved to be a blessing - it happily coincided with wife Nita's birthday on Thursday.

TRENDS| Kingfisher Airlines eyes virgin markets

Kingfisher Airlines is increasingly looking to connect virgin markets, including tourism hotspots like Jodhpur, Jaisalmer and small towns like Surat and Hubli.
"The decision to connect virgin destinations is usually not revenue driven. We are also looking to spur use of air connectivity in these cities by connecting them to the mainland," Kingfisher Airlines global sales head V Raja told mediapersons at a meeting held in Port Blair on Friday.

Kingfisher Airlines has touched cities like Kochi, Goa, Hubli, Kandla, Surat, Trivandrum and also Agatti (Lakshadweep). "The idea is to trigger demand is these destinations since they can prove to be potential revenue earners," he added. "Apart from introducing flights on these routes, we are working closely with our advisory group firm Kingfisher Holidays for tie-ups with hotels in these cities to boost business as well as leisure and tourist traffic. We expect to provide more connectivity and flight options across our network in the months ahead," Kingfisher Airlines' global sales chief said.

Elaborating the airlines plans for Port Blair, Mr Raja said the group is in discussions with the likes of Hotel Sinclairs Bay View and Fortune Resort Bay Island to offer special packages during peak season for holidayers.

TRENDS| Luxury treatment can give you wings after a long flight

"Sitting in the same sedentary position on long-haul trips would make [anyone] feel stiff and achy afterwards," says Belinda Earl, chief executive of Jaeger. "I think it's a really good idea to have a massage when you land at the other side: it helps you to focus and get through those days when you have back-to-back meetings."

Spas are popping up in airports across the globe. "Anywhere around the world these days, you'll be able to walk into an executive lounge and find a spa environment that will help to pep you up on arrival or relax you before a late-night flight," says Ms Earl. Heathrow has the Cowshed Spa in Virgin Atlantic's clubhouse lounge and the Urban Retreat spa as well as BA's Elemis. Demand is high - Mr Harrington says that in its first week the BA Executive lounge spa served 250 people a day.

VIEWS| India to create privately-run airports soon

Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel has said the government plans to allow more private players into the booming aviation industry.

"Today, the growth of aviation cannot be sustained by the existing infrastructure alone and, if the expansion of the aviation has to take place to newer or smaller cities, we must have a new policy, which therefore we are looking on that.

By the year 2008, when the first quarter is complete, we will define a policy under which merchant airports and private airports can also come forward," Patel said on the sidelines of a conference.

Budget carrier Tiger Airways launched its first flight to India and a fifth service to southern China from its Singapore base on Sunday.

The Singapore Airlines-backed Tiger broadened its international network with the flight to the southern Indian city of Chennai and the new service to Xiamen.
