Two more international flights from Nagpur

Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel flagged off two international flights - to Doha and Dubai - from Dr. Ambedkar International Airport here Monday, further boosting the ongoing multi-modal international hub airport at Nagpur (MIHAN) project.

While Qatar Airways will operate its Nagpur-Doha flight twice a week using a 144-seater Airbus 320 aircraft, Air India Express will operate its Mumbai-Nagpur-Dubai flight thrice a week with a 188-seater Boeing 737-800 aircraft, Patel told reporters after flagging off the flights.

Patel said the National Aviation Company of India's (the company formed after the merger of Air India and Indian Airlines) cargo hub would also start functioning from Nagpur from Dec.

The city airport, which so far had only two international flights - to Sharjah and Bangkok - is poised to host many more global airliners operating their services from here in the near future, thanks to the tremendous interest MIHAN and the Special Economic Zone (SEZ) are generating the world over.

SpiceJet offers cutting edge roving check-in facility

SpiceJet, the most preferred low-cost airline in the country, has now gone live with roving check-in at the Mumbai and Delhi airports and plans to implement it in other 15 airports it flies to in phases.

In contrast to the existing conventional check-in facility where passengers stand in queue for check-in and receive their boarding passes, the roving check-in facility provides hassle free air travel experience where the SpiceJet's staff will approach the passengers directly at the airport with hand-held PDAs and handover their boarding passes on the spot.

Announcing the roving check-in facility, SpiceJet's spokesperson Ajay Jasra said, "SpiceJet has initially inducted the hand-held PDAs and Bluetooth enabled mobile printers at Delhi and Mumbai airport looking at the rising number of passengers. This service, in future, will also be extended to smaller cities like Jaipur, Goa, Guwahati, Varanasi and Kochi."

Kingfisher to use expats on ground

Government’s refusal to give permission to use foreign cabin crew in domestic flights has not deterred liquor baron Vijay Mallya from giving an international touch to his domestic airline operations. Kingfisher Airlines has shortlisted over 50 expats professionals — largely from East European countries — to be placed at major metro airports as guest service relations (behind check-in counters and assisting passengers).

“Once they get a firsthand experience of the Indian operations, they would be deployed on international flights as cabin crew,” said a senior Kingfisher executive. The first batch is expected to be seen at major airports by November this year.

This would be a run-up to Kingfisher launching its international operations by April next year, if the government relaxes the mandatory five-year domestic operations norm for private airlines.

Kingfisher had in July sought DGCA’s nod for flying expat cabin crew in domestic routes. But Government put its foot down over the issue.

Kingfisher Airlines May Sell Stake After It Turns Profitable

Kingfisher Airlines Ltd., owned by India's biggest brewer, may sell shares to investors after it becomes profitable as it seeks to expand in India and abroad.
``When Kingfisher turns to profit, which we expect to be in financial year '09, that's the time to consider placing Kingfisher equity,'' Chairman Vijay Mallya said in an interview in London

Billionaire Mallya's Kingfisher Airlines, which began flights in May 2005, is betting rising demand for travel in the world's second fastest-growing economy after China, will help it make profits. India's air travel market is estimated to surge sixfold to 180 million passengers by 2020, the government said in April. Turning profitable will help the 51-year old Mallya raise more money from investors.
``We have many options open to us, but parting with equity or diluting UB's stakeholding in Kingfisher will only be at the right price,'' he said.
Meanwhile, Mallya's UB Group, which owns the airline, will continue to fund the carrier's expansion. Kingfisher, named after the UB Group's best-selling beer brand, operates about 187 flights everyday.

SpiceJet plans more flights and hotel tie-ups

Pune: More take-offs on existing routes, package deals with the hospitality industry, and even an entry into the international markets, is what SpiceJet has on the cards for itself.

According to Kamal Hingorani, vice-president, marketing and planning, SpiceJet, the month of October could see the airline commencing flights from Pune to Chennai, Hyderabad and Ahmedabad.

Pune-Chennai would have a daily, direct flight, while it would fly Pune-Hyderabad on all days except Tuesday. The Pune-Ahmedabad flight would be weekly service every Tuesday.

Hingorani said that there would be four departures and arrivals. Inaugural fares are to be pegged at Rs1,699 for the Pune-Chennai route, and Rs799 for the Pune-Hyderabad route, plus taxes as applicable.

The Pune-Ahmedabad route was somewhat of a relaunch for the airline, as previously it had been a night slot that had been discontinued.

SpiceJet is also planning flights to Port Blair, which would originate from Chennai and Kolkata. Also on the anvil are plans to connect Pune with Kochi and Goa. These flights are expected to taxi onto the Pune runway, once it's resurfacing is completed around March 2008.

Incidentally, SpiceJet has also reduced its Delhi-Mumbai flights from six to one.

Hingorani also said that SpiceJet was negotiating with hospitality companies in Goa and Kochi, for possible tie-ups with three- and four-star hotels. Presently, the airline was targeting only stand-alone hotels in these cities, and expects to launch these packages in about three months.

SpiceJet is awaiting government approval for going international. Hingorani added that the airline has identified West and South East Asia to as its first ports of call for its international operations. The South East Asian locations would probably be Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore while the foremost location in West Asia would be Dubai, according to the company.

InterGlobe plans exclusive airport to handle private, business jets

Gurgaon-based airplane selling and servicing company InterGlobe General Aviation Pvt. Ltd is in talks with several companies, including Reliance Industries Ltd, the Tata group and Reliance Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group (R-ADAG) to set up a dedicated airport facility for private and business jets.

FBOs are exclusive facilities that offer parking, fuelling, ground handling, maintenance, pilot management and other services for private jets of wealthy individuals or corporate houses.

However, a personal familiar with the situation, who didn’t want to be named, said InterGlobe was in discussions with business groups such as Reliance and the Tatas. Executives of these companies declined to comment for this story.
Some of these companies are keen to develop the Juhu airport as a FBO while other options are evaluated in Delhi, Chennai and Kolkata.

Deccan, SpiceJet lose mkt share

Hit by monsoon blues, budget carriers, Air Deccan and SpiceJet, have suffered loss in market share during July 2007 — the latest month for which official traffic data is available. According to Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) figures, full-service carriers marginally increased their market share during the month.

Country’s largest low-cost carrier, Air Deccan, saw its market share going down to 16.1% in July this year, down by 2 percentage points as compared to the previous month. SpiceJet’s share stood at 7.7% during the month as against 7.7% in June.
SpiceJet’s seat factor declined to 71.4% during July as compared to 77.9% in June. Seat factor of Air Deccan fell too sharply in July to 67.7% from 84.8% in June. The declining share of the two low-cost players is probably on account of hike in fares which has improved their revenues.

SpiceJet officials, however, could not be contacted for comment. Market share of full service airlines — Indian, Jet Airways and Kingfisher –– increased marginally. The market share of Indian went up to 20.5% in July as compared to 19.8% in June. Jet, the market leader, increased its share to 22.7% as compared to 22% in the previous month. Kingfisher increased its market share to 13% in July as compared to 12.9% in June.

Qatar Airways continues Indian expansion policy

Qatar Airways has further expanded into India with the launch of scheduled flights to Nagpur and Ahmedabad.

Both destinations allow the cargo operations to serve as transporter to a wide range of Indian industries. The Qatar-based company has targeted the automotive, chemicals and pharmaceuticals sectors in Nagpur, and will be carrying textiles and woollen goods from Ahmedabad.

Having rapidly expanded its freighter network and number of worldwide destinations during 2007, Qatar Airlines Cargo believes the recent addition of a third Airbus A300-600F will allow for further expansion.
"Currently we are looking at operating a freighter to Thiruvananthapuram, but cannot confirm any dates at this stage," said Batten.

Inaugurating the new arrival terminal 1B at the Chatrapati Shivaji International Airport (CSIA) at Mumbai, he said the new routes would be announced in near future.
The modernisation and expansion of airports at Banagalore and Hyderabad will be complete by March next year. Once the proposed airports at Navi Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur and Aurangabad come up by 2011-12, the Centre would open up new routes to these destinations connecting Lathur, Nanded, Amaravati and Akola in Maharashtra, Patel said.

Commenting on the proposed expansion plans of the airport, Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilas Rao Deshmukh said the rehabilitation of people would be done "with a humanitarian face" while acquiring land for the expansion.

GV Krishna Reddy, chairman, Mumbai International Airport Pvt Ltd (MIAL), said the new terminal was constructed with an expenditure of over Rs 130 crore (Rs 1.3 billion). MIAL has spent over Rs 600 crore (Rs 6 billion) since May 2006 for the upgrade of the airport. It plans to install 11 aerobridges at the CSIA by next year and tenders have been floated, he said.

MIAL is the first public-private partnership in India to maintain airports, a joint venture between the GVK-SA consortium and Airports Authority of India (AAI) to modernise and upgrade the Chatrapati Shivaji International Airport(CSIA).

Paramount plans to fly abroad, talks on for aircraft

Paramount Airways Pvt. Ltd is in talks with aircraft makers Boeing Co. and Airbus Industrie to buy six wide-bodied planes with an aim of launching international operations by fiscal 2011.

The airline, which has so far restricted itself to southern India with an all-Embraer fleet of five leased aircraft, also plans to establish a new aircraft maintenance facility in Madurai in collaboration with Brazilian aircraft manufacturer Empresa Brasileira de Aeronáutica SA at an estimated $40-60 million (Rs161-242 crore) investment.

“We are evaluating both wide-bodied aircraft—(Boeing’s) 787 and 350 XWB (Xtra Wide-Body of Airbus),” said Paramount’s chairman M. Thiagarajan on the airline’s growth plans. He did not specify when the deal could be sealed.

Dinesh Keskar, vice-president for sales at Boeing, confirmed initial talks with Paramount.

Paramount’s five 70-seater aircraft are capable of flying four hours non-stop and may also connect nearby destinations in South-East Asia such as Singapore if the government relaxes rules for flying international routes.

Reliance eyes travel foray

The Mukesh Ambani-promoted Reliance Retail’s plans to enter the travel space is gaining momentum. The company has applied to the International Air Transport Association (IATA), the industry body for accreditation and registration of travel agents and airlines, for starting a travel agency outlet in Mumbai.

The company plans to be in the entire gamut of travel-related business offering services like ticketing, hotel rooms, holiday packages, travel insurance, car rentals, among other products. Sources in the travel and airline business told ET that Reliance Retail has drawn out plans to set up 140 travel outlets in India and abroad.

Even though a senior IATA executive confirmed the development, a Reliance spokesperson declined to comment. It usually takes up to two months for accreditation formalities to get completed.

“As part of Reliance’s retail strategy, they now want to tap the tier II and III towns in India by providing them access to superior travel services,” an industry source revealed.

News: Jet Airways planning Bahrain flights

India' largest private airline, Jet Airways, is planning to fly to Bahrain from early next year, it emerged yesterday.

The carrier has applied for Indian government permission to fly to the "lucrative" Gulf routes, including Bahrain, but would not actually start operations before January next year, sources told the GDN.

"It is a positive development in case the go-ahead is given to us," said Jet Airways Dubai-based Gulf regional manager Shakir Kantawala.

"We have not heard anything concrete yet, but are hoping for a favourable development," he said. Mr Kantawala said that the Gulf was a lucrative route to operate to, with Bahrain and the UAE "growing tremendously".

"In addition, Qatar is poised for rapid and dramatic growth. In all this, we would fit in perfectly," he said.

Sources told the GDN that Jet had applied for flights to six Gulf destinations from next year.

Merchant banking sources say that the Government of India is likely to raise between Rs 2,400 crore and Rs3,800 crore through the proposed public issue of Air India.

This figure is based on the assumption that the government will offer 20-25 percent of the airline's stock.

News: Jet eyes daily Doha-Kozhikode and Doha-Mumbai flights

Jet Airways, is likely to have daily services from Doha to Mumbai and Kozhikode, when operations start next January.

Sources in Doha said the general sales agent, Cleopatra Travels, was “trying to have daily operations” though no final decision had been taken.

India’s civil aviation ministry on Friday decided to grant traffic rights to Jet Airways on the India-Gulf/Middle East routes with effect from January 1.

Indian expatriates welcomed the decision. They feel a choice of carriers will at least improve the services, if not bring down the high fares in the sector. Although Qatar-India fares are regulated by the civil aviation authorities in this country, expatriates are hoping that fares would soon be determined by market conditions, as they are in many countries including the UAE.

According to the New Delhi decision, Jet can offer 2,100 seats to Qatar a week - 1,050 on the Mumbai-Doha route and 1,050 on the Kozhikode-Doha sector.

Jet could make a bigger impact in the Kozhikode sector, because the average daily quota of 150 seats is double the current availability.

Currently only state-owned carrier Indian offers a non-stop service to Kozhikode from Doha.

IndiGo to launch daily flight from Goa to Kochi on Sept 16

The low-fare domestic airline will launch its daily flight on the Mumbai-Goa-Kochi route on September 16, with the newly acquired Airbus A320 from Airbus in Toulouse, France operating along the route.

The chief commercial officer of IndiGo, Mr Sanjay Kumar, informed this daily that the one-way fare from Goa to Kochi will be Rs 999, while the one-way fare from Goa to Mumbai will be Rs 500. “The airline already has a Goa-Delhi daily flight since last November,” he added.

Speaking further, Mr Kumar said that there was no direct flight available from Goa to Kerala, in spite of the fact that large segment of tourists, both Indian and international, travel to and fro between these tourist states. He also pointed out, “large number of people from Kerala have settledA in Goa and regularly visit their native land.”

Mr Kumar maintained that affordable fares, on-time performance and hassle-free travel are three aspects strictly followed by IndiGo.

State govts lining up sops to attract airlines

At least a dozen Indian states are offering financial concessions and infrastructural facilities to airlines to step up air connectivity in their cities.

These states are considering reduction in sales taxes and offering soft loans to airlines as compensation for servicing far-flung areas that were previously not part of air networks. Linking small cities is often financially unviable for a scheduled carrier. Some of the states are also upgrading airstrips to potentially handle small planes.

Consulting firms such as Infrastructure Leasing & Financial Services Ltd (IL&FS), Infrastructure Development Finance Co. Ltd (IDFC) and Feedback Ventures Pvt. Ltd are assisting some of the state governments in wooing airlines as well as in upgrading airports.

The Uttarakhand government, for instance, has invited expression of interest from airline operators having valid licences for operating commercial flights in the state.

IL&FS is also currently working on similar projects for Rajasthan and Gujarat.
Feedback Ventures had earlier assisted the Karnataka government to develop airports at various places including Hassan, Shimoga, Bijapur, Raichur and Gulbarga, as a preliminary step to boost air connectivity.

The Kerala government is also formulating concessions for airlines to increase the connectivity within the state as well as flights to other states.

The north-eastern states of Meghalaya, Assam, Tripura, Mizoram, Manipur, Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh have also invited airline operators to increase routes in their states.

More greenfield airports on anvil

The aviation industry in India is gearing up for the next phase of its airport modernisation and expansion programme for greenfield airports.

The ministry of civil aviation has given its approval for construction of greenfield airports at Navi Mumbai and Goa in public-private partnership model.

Navi Mumbai is the most significant new airport project in India, and will be Mumbai’s second airport. The construction of this facility is critical for the city with the current airport expected to reach maximum capacity by 2012.

Meanwhile, the Airports Authority of India last week announced details of its upgrade plans for Kolkata, Chennai and the existing Goa airport. Punjab government recently announced that a new airport will be built at Mohali, and the government of West Bengal is keen to see the development of a greenfield airport in the industrial belt of Durgapur-Asansol, one of the most highly populated regions in India without an airport.

The civil aviation ministry has submitted legislation to Parliament during the monsoon session for the establishment of an Airport Economic Regulatory Authority with the responsibility of looking after airport charges and service levels.

Air Deccan now set to be renamed Simplifly Deccan

Air Deccan, India’s first low-fare carrier promoted by silk farmer-turned-aviator G. Gopinath, will be now rebranded as “Simplifly Deccan”.

Simplifly is the tagline of the Air Deccan brand and the name of the airline’s in-flight magazine.

The rebranding exercise was started after UB Group, which runs premium airline Kingfisher Airlines and is owned by liquor baron Vijay Mallya, acquired a 26% stake in Deccan Aviation Ltd that operates Air Deccan.

This Bangalore-based no-frills carrier will also ditch the logo of two palms joining together to reflect a flying bird or the tail of an airplane and will use the Kingfisher bird logo, which is also the UB Group logo.

Deccan’s aircraft would also be painted red and white, similar to Kingfisher Airlines’ colours, instead of the current blue and white. The uniform of Deccan’s cabin crew will also be changed to red and white from the current blue and yellow. This, too, will sport a logo of Kingfisher.

Another person, who does not want to be quoted, said though the brand would be named as Simplifly Deccan, there will not be any change in the company’s name or website.

Jetstar eyes Indian destinations

Low-cost carrier Jetstar may use Malaysia as its Asian hub when it flies to south Europe in the near future following its inaugural flight to the Kuala Lumpur International Airport last Sunday.

Jetstar chief executive officer Alan Joyce said the carrier was now in talks with airport authorities in Europe, but a decision on its flights to that continent would not be made until the end of next year.

He said a particular constraint it was facing was the shortage of aircraft, which would be resolved by August next year when it took delivery of 15 Boeing 787 Dreamliners (B787-8) over a period of 15 months for its long-haul fleet.
Joyce said Jetstar was the fastest growing international carrier and it was also looking at new destinations such as Taiwan, Korea, India, China, southern Europe and North America.

Asked on Malaysian low-cost carrier Air Asia X’s upcoming flight to Australia, Joyce said the airlines were competing on different routes and different markets.

Jet Airairways to Fly UAE, Qatar, Oman, Kuwait and Bahrain Soon

The lucrative Gulf routes will no longer be the sole domain of public carriers Indian and Air India.
Jet Airways and its subsidiary Jetlite could be the first private Indian airlines given permission to fly there.Civil Aviation Ministry sources tell CNN-IBN Jet could soon fly to Dubai, Abu Dabhi, Qatar, Oman, Kuwait and Bahrain.

Permissions are likely in a few weeks. But flights cannot start before January, when the government ban on private sector flights to the Gulf is lifted.

The ban dates back to 2004 when private airlines were allowed to fly abroad but kept out of this revenue-generating route

Currently both public carriers together can operate about 85,400 seats weekly to the Gulf. But they are able to utilise just half this number, mostly due to the shortage of aircraft.

Frequent flyers get special privileges

Jet Airways has over 1 million members under its frequent flyer programme. Similarly, Kingfisher Airlines offers a host of privileges under its frequent flyer programme King Club. The King Club membership comprises three Royal tiers - Red, Silver and Gold.

To retain the tier status, one needs to fly the required number of times per year. One can earn miles by not just flying but also by booking online as well as through web and kiosk check-in .

"The privilege of getting free tickets for a holiday trip with family is the biggest attraction of the loyalty programme. Sales and marketing professionals, consulting agents and project managers are the ones who travel the most and earn enough miles to take an overseas vacation trip," says Kingfisher Airlines, GM (sales), Manoj Chacko.
Jet Airways also offers the privilege of buying miles if you fall short of a few points on a particular route.

Kingfisher signs with OnAir for in-flight internet & mobile services

India’s Kingfisher Airlines has signed with OnAir for in-flight Internet and mobile phone communications services for its planned long-haul international operations.

OnAir announced this morning at Asian Aerospace in Hong Kong that the in-flight communications services will start to be introduced by Kingfisher in 2008, and that by 2009 passengers will be able to use the Internet while in-flight, as well as send and receive emails and make and receive calls on their own mobile devices.

The services will initially be offered on five Airbus A330s and five Airbus A340-500s. OnAir says the airline plans to eventually have the system on all its long-range aircraft. The carrier also has Airbus A350s and A380s on order.

Kingfisher is the first Indian carrier to sign with OnAir, which is a joint venture between Airbus and SITA. Its services are based on an onboard server connected to ground through Inmarsat’s broadband satellite infrastructure, SwiftBroadband.

Low-cost airlines set to take off, says Airbus

Asia's low-cost airlines are set for "explosive" growth and are likely to equal the market share of their counterparts in the US and Europe in two decades, according to Airbus.

Low-cost airlines have about 9 per cent of the Asian short-haul passenger traffic, compared with 31 per cent in North America and 26 per cent in Europe.
But Airbus chief commercial officer John Leahy, speaking at the Asian Aerospace show in Hong Kong, said: "The low-cost model is set to explode in terms of growth in Asia.

"I'm sure that all three markets will be at about 40 per cent in 20 years."
Concerning India and China, Peter Negline, Tiger's chief financial officer, said yesterday: "The growth potential there is simply astonishing over the coming two decades and we're looking to participate in that whole-heartedly."

While Asia will catch up with America and Europe, the "minor twist" is that Asian low-cost airlines will mostly rely on wide-body aircraft rather than the single-aisle type favoured in Europe for shorter distances, according to Mr Leahy.
In spite of plans by Beijing to restrict the launch of new airlines, Mr Leahy said airport infrastructure and other shortages would still force China and India to get more passengers on to fewer flights: "What you're going to see is a push towards larger aircraft in China and India as congestion hits."

Air India may ramp up fleet to 200

National carrier Air India may substantially scale up its fleet size to nearly 200 aircraft by 2011. It is currently undertaking an internal exercise to assess demand for aircraft till 2011 and beyond, company chairman V Thulasidas told ET.

As part of this exercise, a fresh fleet expansion plan is being contemplated in order to cater to traffic growth.

“We are working on traffic projections beyond 2011,” Mr Thulasidas said. The two merged national carriers would have a combined fleet size of around 125 aircraft by 2011 after taking current orders (which are being executed) into account.

The old Air India and Indian Airlines had placed orders for 111 extra aircraft in 2005-06. These are in the process of being inducted into the fleet by 2011.

Kingfisher plan to fly overseas under cloud

Kingfisher Airlines' plan to fly from Bangalore to San Francisco from April 2008 and thereafter to New York would be in jeopardy if there is no change in government policy on overseas flights by airlines.

Kingfisher Airlines Chairman Vijay Mallya has said that he would use the rights of Air Deccan to fly overseas. But that may be easier said than done.
Under existing government policy, only airlines that have been flying domestically for more than five years are eligible to fly overseas.

"There is no provision to allow one carrier to use the other's rights if one just has a stake in the other," says a senior aviation ministry official. Only if an airline is fully bought over or merged can the rights be used interchangeably. The policy is that "traffic rights on international routes allotted to an airline being taken over will be transferred subject to its actual use."

It is important to note that the A340-500 aircraft that Kingfisher plans to use for the overseas flights, with 36 first class and 204 Kingfisher class seats, will be Kingfisher aircraft.

Moreover, the service that Kingfisher intends to provide is intrinsically linked to its brand and will be a premium business class product, with possibly a 'chef-on-board', quite in contrast to what Air Deccan might offer as and when it does
fly overseas.

Jet is getting ready to fly to West Asia

Jet Airways (India) Ltd, has applied to the government for permission to fly West Asia routes from India, ahead of the year-end expiry of a monopoly that state-owned carriers Air India Ltd and Indian Airlines Ltd have been guaranteed on the lucrative sector, its chairman has said.

“We have applied to the civil aviation ministry to fly to Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Bahrain, Muscat, Doha and Kuwait and are hoping to get a favourable response as per the policy,” Naresh Goyal, who chairs the board of the Mumbai-based aviation firm, said in an interview on Tuesday.

Goyal’s continued focus on international expansion comes at a time when foreign carriers such as Deutsche Lufthansa AG, Etihad and British Airways Plc. are increasing the frequency of flights to and from India; they are being, matched in part by Air India. (On Tuesday, Jet announced new flights to Toronto from Delhi via Brussels.)

West Asian routes, despite intense price competition, have been a cash cow for India’s state-run airlines in the last three years, during which no other Indian carrier could fly there.

Jet to 'cooperate' with Air India for market share

Jet Airways will "cooperate" with Air India to capture a larger share of international air traffic as it does with other global carriers, the company's chairman Naresh Goyal said in New Delhi on Tuesday.

"Air India is doing a great job. It will be a very good airline," Goyal said as he announced the launch of his carrier's new five-flights-a-week service to Toronto via Brussels from Wednesday.

"If we cooperate with Air India, the new Air India, we definitely can get a 50 per cent market share. We look forward to cooperating with Air India," he added, as Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel, listened with attention.

Air India has plans to become a large carrier with a dominant position in both the domestic and international segments after the merger with Indian Airlines that has the government's approval.

Goyal said Brussels will be the hub for his carrier in Europe and eventually proposed to serve at least 50 destinations either on its own or through partnerships with other carriers.

Gear up to fly to new destinations, Patel tells airlines

Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel today asked airlines to gear up to fly to destinations other than the US, Britain or Singapore sectors.

"There are so many airlines who fly in and out of the country but none of th
e designated airlines from India is flying there (new destinations)," Patel told reporters at a function to mark Jet Airways's inaugural flight to Toronto.

This does not mean that airlines should give up their traditional routes, he pointed out.

To a question whether the five-year limit would be decreased to allow more airlines to operate on international routes, Patel said there was a guideline as of now and all airlines would have to adhere to it.
